Monday 9/29

Up at 630 at Joliet free wall, free is good.  Called Brandon lock, had a bunch of tows to wait for, will not move off dock until they are clear.  Finally, get the call, depart the wall at 11:30, so much for an early start.  We arrive at 12:15 out at 12:45, with a 20 ft. drop with Beulah Belle and Allez.  At mile marker 277, at 1406 finally passed the tow Sam Flemming – the same tow we waited for four hours at the Lockport lock on Sunday. We catch and pass them during the day then they run 24/7 so while we sleep they pass us again.  A vicious circle.  14:39 arrive Dresdan lock wait for a a southbound tow Frank Jahn.  Again a one hour wait. 1535 finally in Dresden lock and leave 25 minutes later.  Allez stops at Springbook marina for evening.  We continue on until we pull in behind Grist Island and anchor for the evening with Beulah Bells.  Wally from BB picks us up in his dingy. We grab beers and wine and enjoy dinner of stuffed peppers and apple pie with our hosts.  Most enjoyable! During dinner the wind picked up and we wished we put out more anchor chain put the anchor held.  Tom slept great, Colletta tossed and turned.  Total hours : 9 hours 45 minutes.  Moving time: 4 hours and 12 minutes.  25.1 miles.

Day 2: Sunday Sept, 28, 2014 Marine Services Dolton, Il. to Joilet, Il.
Locks: 1 Mileage: 46 miles traveled
Colletta and I along with our 2 cats ( George and Knuckles) departed Marine Services ( mile marker 324.2) at 8:32 headed south. We went by our old boat club on the river the Lake Calumet Boat and Gun Club in Dolton where our boating career started back in the late 70's. Many of our old  haunts from those days look like they have been riden' hard and put away wet. None look better today  with the exception of where we stayed last night. Marine Services looks better that the old days. At 1055 at mm 303.4 we merged with the Chicago Ship and Sanitary Canal. I called the Lockport Lock and they said things looked pretty clear but that could change. Remember that could change. Going down the Lockport commercial corridor. Lots of tow traffic. We had to hide in mooring slips and behind barges so the tows could get by. Very narrow and very busy and this was Sunday. I had planned to cruise thru here on Sunday hoping this would not be so busy. At 12:34 we arrived at the Lockport Lock. This is the same lock that when Tom Mirus and I brought the boat up from Texas in 2011 broke and we had to wait for 6 hours until 10:30 at night. Well it came up to bite me in the butt again. The lockmaster said they had to lock thru a double which means the barges are too many to make it thru the lock at one time so they break the load apart. The lockmaster said to take our timeLocks as it would take 2 hours to lock the tows thru. Well he was not much of a judge of time as we didn't get the call to come to the lock until 4:45 pm. By that time the Bears had gotten their butts whipped by the Packers which we got to listen to on the radio thru the Packers radio network. They have a different perspective then the Bears announcers. With the Bear game going badly Colletta got bored and took a wall along the canal wall. I don't think I have ever had anyone get off the boat and go for a walk before, We got into the lock at 5:15 and out at 5:45. While we were waiting on the wall to lock thru the lock we had 2 other trawlers come in and tie up. We were the welcoming committee.. Allez and Beulah Belle. After we finally got out of the lock we had 3 miles to go to the free wall tie up in downtown Joliet( 30 amp power included) I like free.  But first a tow with 10 barges asked the Ruby Street bridge tender if she would hold us  up until he went by. So we waited. Not exactly something new. Turned out it was a good request. With all his barges and the narrow channel it would have not been fun. Finally arrived at the free dock at 6:50 pm. We tied upfirst and then helped the others tie up. The AGLCA has harbor hosts so Dale and Brenda Karlson stopped by. Bob and Helen Kovach on the trawler Allez had called them prior to our arrival. They told us great local knowledge that will be helpful in our travels. Had a great dinner of casserole that Colletta had frozen. Just microwave. Who wants to cook after a long day on the water. We are looking for 4 or 5 ingredient recipes that we can make ahead during the day when we travel.
Colletta just reminded me two things I forgot to mention. Today we counted 48 blue, grey, and white herons on the waterway. Also while going thru a remote area of Palos Park, Illinois there was a unmistakeable strong aroma of bacon. I mean strong and who  doesn't like bacon.

Day one: The beginning of the great adventure

Saturday Sept. 27, 2014
Peter and I left New Buffalo, Michigan from the Lake Michigan Yacht Club at 11:08 this morning. Colletta is following in the car and will meet us in Dolton, Illinois at Marine Services. We finally had everything loaded on the boat and it still floats. We headed 10 miles south to Michigan City, In for cheaper fuel. ( $ 3.89 vs $ 4.35 per gallon in New Buffalo). We topped off our tanks and departed across Lake Michigan for the mouth of the Calumet River 26 n.m. away. The newly installed AIS worked great. It picked up its first target in Michigan City the boat Hot Tomolly. He was in his slip but showed up. Yea we now know it works. As we pulled out of Michigan City Port Authority the chartplotter lit up with commercial traffic in the steel mills. Very Cool. We had a perfect fall day crossing. Minimal winds out of the east so hardly any wave action at all. As we approached the 95th Street break wall which protects the river entrance a number of AIS alarms went off. A large lake ore boat named Manistee was on a collision course with us. It was interesting but then got even more interesting when a second alarm went off. The AIS shows your collision point and then shows a half sinking boat. Nice touch. It was nice to be able to see the boat names on the AIS before the boat came into view so I could call them and ask their intentions. It was also nice coming up the river and knowing how many boats we would be encountering. We got under all the bridges without lowering the radar arch but we measured the boat before we left and it is 18 feet 6 inches to the top of the anchor light. Even knowing that I had Pete climb up on the hard top to eye ball the the bridges.
Got held up at the Thomas O' Brian Lock for an hour. Finally pulled into Marine
services at near dark. Much later then we expected. Colletta was there to help with the lines as we docked between 2 boats. She also brought pizza which makes her wife of the year. Then Tom Mirus and Peggy stopped in for pizza. Get dinner with good friends. Really appreciated that they drove over from Joliet to see us. Everything worked fine on the boat with the exception of the refrigerator didn't run on only 12 volts. There is a fuse on the frig I will have to check. Until then we keep the frig closed and run the generator a little more.
End of a long day pulling into Marine Services, Dolton, Illinois
