June 21-June 23, 2016 Belhaven to Alligator River Marina

Tuesday, June 21, 2016 Bellhaven Anchorage to Alligator River in Anchorage.

Because we had a short distance to travel this morning, we got a slow leisurely start. Engine checks and breakfast on the Lido Deck. anchor up at 1005, muddy chain and anchor. During the night, a sailboat had his anchor drag and this morning he was aground and had to call TowboatUS to pull him to deeper water. Winds are forecasted to increase tonite so we are looking for an anchorage with protection from southwesterly winds. We traveled through the Alligator River/Pungo river canal.  The water is very dark in color much like tea or coffee. It Is because of tannic acid in the water from decaying vegetation along the waterways. The canal goes through remote areas and is very desolate. We did see 2 bald eagles sitting high in the trees.  We got settled and relaxed. While sitting, this roar was heard and we saw 4 sets of military jets. They are fast and loud!  It is amazing that we had no cell phone coverage or internet service and yet this sophisticated technology is flying overhead.  We used our new "Lodge" fry pan ( thanks Jason and April) for cooking dinner and enjoyed a quiet evening aboard Greeks Folly.

Wednesday June 22- Alligator River anchorage to Alligator River Marina

The winds were calm during the night but started to kick up again the morning.  The anchor came up easily and with no mud which was a nice surprise.  We headed up the Alligator River with a beam sea. It was a little rolly. While traveling we once again had military jets above-some we saw and some we just heard.  One set of the jets "buzzed" us a couple of time - very impressive.  After a 20 mile run we pulled into Alligator River Marina. This marina is run by Miss Wanda and her son Logan, who is the dockmaster.  The road is on one side of the gas station/convenient store and the Marina with fuel and docks is behind the building on the other side of the store.  This is a family business and is a wonderful stop, especially appreciated by Tom.  The small kitchen inside is known for their fried chicken so that is what we had for dinner-yum yum.  The night and the water were calm.  We took the opportunity to use John's expertise for some computer tutoring.  A learning experience. We also had a portable 12 volt/110 volt refrigerator/freezer shipped to us by Amazon to the marina. It is amazing that if you can get internet you can order stuff and have it shipped to marina you will be at down the way and there it is.

It doesn't look like the wind is blowing but it was. All three boats
anchored as close to shore as possible to get out of the wind.
it is amazing. you call Amazon and 2 days later in pretty much
the middle of no where your freezer arrives.

Thursday, June 23 Alligator  River Marina.

It rained through the night and we awoke to an overcast sky. Tom changed the oil in the engines and John of course was his first assistant, during that time a thunderstorm rolled through with strong rain. Colletta did some cleaning and emptied the cooler and scrubbed it clean. After our manual labor an ice cream break was called for. Blackcherry and pralines and cream were the preferred flavor. John did more computer tutoring with Tom and his telephone.  We tried a new recipe, low country shrimp boil, with red rice. We finished the frozen shrimp and shared the meal with Short Vacation.   Tom is looking forward to the leftovers tomorrow as the flavor continue to meld.  He is already thinking of recipe alterations to make for the next try.  Took a quick shower and called it a night.
Gas station on the highway and a nice homey marina on the water front.
Really sweet. Clean bathrooms and showers. Priceless.

Miss Annette had a small kitchen but did big time
flavorful chicken dinners. Scrumptious!
