The Gun Barrel at Bustards Islands to Bad River

Aug 15 and 16-Wed and Thurs- The Gun Barrel to Bad River
The short ride up to Bad River was a good one where the low gray rock is replaced by high rounded pink granite.  This is a popular place - 12 boats anchored to do fishing and exploring.  Tom and John enjoyed a ride, just the guys , while Colletta enjoyed the solitude - which does not happen often on a boat.  The water and winds in the bay can be swirling.  At one time four boats were all pointing different directions due to the current from the river, the wind and the weight and kind of each boat.
The next morning half the boats left so Greeks Folly moved and anchored to make for more swing room.  We jumped into the dinghy and started exploring.  We went thru Devils Door Rapids (not an issue) and up Cross Channel.  Along the way we past 2 sets of rapids (one we shot up and rode back down), went to Beaver Narrows (self named as we followed a beaver up there) fished by two lower pools of the rapids (with no luck) and finished the ride going thru the Lodge Channel.  Back at the boat, a dip, a nap and a beer topped off the afternoon.  The evening was calm and relaxing.

A sign on the brown house as you enter the anchorage.
Most of these cottages ( or camps as they are called up here)
are unattended much of the time but you don't see any
vandalism.

Beavers at work

Some of the loons that are here in the Bustards.
Their cries are comforting and eerie.

Coming into Bad River channel. Well marked and
comfortable

The Lodges as you enter Bad River. Some are fishing
camps where you can rent boats and guides.

Found this beaver preening himself on the rock.
He was so into himself he allowed us to get really
close as we he wanted us to admire him.

In the dinghy we followed the beaver up, Beaver Narrows

and yes it was narrow.

Shooting the rapids. It probably would be much
more impressive if the water wasn't so high.
the water is 3 feet above chart datum. ( That means
what is marked on the navigational charts. So an area
marked 6 feet deep on our charts, this year, is
The pink granite surrounding Bad River anchorage.
In spite of the name Bad River is a wonderful anchorage
with many dinghy and kayak areas to explore

Some of the locals tie their boats right to the granite
walls. The boat is the back with black canvas stays
here a month tied to the wall.
 approximately 9 feet
in reality)
