May 26 Kilkenny Marina to Isle of Hope, GA

We departed Kilkenny marina at 10:30 in the morning.  We timed our departure from the marina so that we could arrive at Hellgate near high tide.  Hellgate is a very shallow cut and in order to get through it we wanted to arrive at high tide, as possible. We arrived at Hellgate marker number 1210. We made it through with no problem with 11 feet of water at high tide at 12:15. Perfect timing. We arrived isle of Hope Marina at 1356. Traveled 22 1/2 NM.  This is a nice marina about 15 minutes outside of downtown Savannah. We are still traveling with Short Vacation and Pam and John have the car. That made it very nice for accessibility into the city. We will be in this marina for over Memorial day weekend and will enjoy the whole Savannah area.

May 27-31 Isle of Hope, Savannah, Tybee Island.

The next five days were spent exploring the Savannah area. The area is beautiful with its moss covered live oak trees, white picket fence houses, blooming flowers, and stately mansions. We visited the city of Savannah and took a trolley tour to explore the area. The city is comprised of many green space squares, each with the monument to an important historical figure. We enjoyed the square where Forest Gump sat on the park bench. The Riverwalk area is parallel to the Savannah River with many restaurants and shops. It is a working harbor and a happening place. We toured a restored mansion with period furnishings and design.  On a rainy Saturday we went over to Tybee Island and enjoyed viewing the lighthouse and beach as well as having pizza at Huc-A-Poos Bites and Booze. On, Tuesday we accompanied Pam and John to move the car to Charlston.  Although the ride was long we got to see the low country and the Charleston Harbor and enjoy a great lunch with our new friends Glenn and Brenda.  We also took time to do some shopping and restocking of provisions for the next leg of our trip.

The movie Forrest Gump was filmed in Savannah. This is
the church steeple the feather floats by in the beginning of the movie

This is the location of the park bench where Forest was sitting
waiting for the bus. The bench from the movie is in a local
museum.

Our boat on the face dock at Isle of Hope Marina. Short Vacation
is right in front of us. We docked so we were going into the current
when we arrived. Easier to control your boat into current.
One of the beautiful houses in Isle of Hope. Across from the
marina
General James Oglethorpe the founder of Savannah
in 1733. He planned the entire city out around small parks
2 years before he arrived in what was to become Savannah.
They are still using the plan today. Amazing.

The marina we used as a base for seeing Savannah

We took a side trip to Tybee Island. This lighthouse
base is 12 feet thick.

Another beautiful house across the street from the marrina
John and I in the garden of the Owens-Thomas house in Savannah.
River Street in downtown Savannah along the river
We  were eating at a restaurant on River Street when this container
